See you on Wednesday!

IDSArm October Event

FWD from IDSArm:

"Hello Design Community:

IDSArm wanted to inform you all that we have NOT fallen off the face of the earth. We wanted to be respectful to those who have families with little ones getting into the groove of school. Some of the college students have been out of state and too are getting settled into this next semester. However, NOW WE ARE BACK TO BEING DISRESPECTFUL! : )

The IDSArm team has put together another GREAT opportunity for professionals and students to mingle. And yes, as this next event will be in October – beer will be involved!

We are still working out the details however, this is how we see it going down:

Date: October 20th
Time: 6:30 – 10:00 p.m.
Place: Lisa Kowalski’s gallery
2762 Walnut St., Denver, CO

Objective: 3 Fold actually!

1. Speed dating concept. However with a twist. Students will bring ONE project (most likely a senor thesis or capstone project - however, not limited to that criteria only). They get 5 minutes in front of a design professional and will need to present and receive feedback in that time frame. Then the student will move over to the next seat and that professional will critique that same project in 5 minutes. By the end of the event – you will have had approx 15 professional’s input. We HOPE then that some time in March we will have the same event and you can get some last minute feed back before FINAL projects are due. Again...you’re being exposed to many different design influences from different disciplines and educational backgrounds. Your project doesn’t have to be in immaculate form for this either. That’s in part why the secondary event will be offered.

Professionals: Make note – this is a great way to give back to the design community and to spend 5 minutes with a potential future employee.
Students: Make note – this a a great way to...blah blah blah! ; ) YOU GET IT!

2. Presentation from someone. Preferably someone who has access to beer. Seriously. Ok, actually – someone who would sponsor the event so we can make this a FREE event or a VERY minimal charge. Know anyone?

3. Pumpkin carving contest. That’s right. BYOP! And bring your own carving tools. We’re going to split teams evenly and each team will either be given or will have to come up with a theme and all team members will bring to fruition the team vision. There will be some SERIOUS schwag given out to the winners.

All we ask of you right now is to MARK YOUR CALENDARS and be ready to RSVP so we can organize appropriately. An actual PDF promoting this event will be sent out in the next week or so.

Hopefully you will agree that this event is a great way to start off the FALL season. Please make it a priority to attend.

Thank you and HOPE to see a full turn out! Especially YOU PROFESSIONALS! : )"

"Please join the IDSA Design for the Majority Section in a discussion
with Emily Pilloton of Project H, on September 16th at 4pm (Eastern
Time) / 1pm (Pacific Time). Leslie Speer, Chair of the Design for the
Majority Section, will be moderating this online event:
"Design For, As, and Is Education: Growing Creative Capital for Social Impact"

Emily Pilloton, founder of Project H Design, has long believed that
design can change the world. But the path by which design inspires
impact is messy, magical, and in most cases, uncharted. As we all
struggle to find the best ways to orient our creative careers around
positive impact in the world, Emily will make the case for local
design initiatives, design and building in public education,
relearning the way we design, and design outside of the "design
bubble".

As one of two instructors of Studio H, Project H's high school
design/build program in rural North Carolina, Emily has recently been
inspired by the intersection of design and education, and believes the
best way to design for social impact is to grow design thinking from
within communities, rather than importing talent and
dragging-and-dropping solutions. Up for debate during this session
will be the issue of "humanitarian design as imperialism," as inspired
by Emily's recent head-butting with design pundit Bruce Nussbaum, and
how design education (K-12 and college level) must become more
commonplace for our collective benefit."

Check out Spencer Nugent's sketch-a-day.com

If you're having problems getting your daily sketch on, check out Spencer Nugent's sketch-a-day.com site for daily sketch inspiration.

"What is Sketch-A-Day

The Sketch-A-Day project is one I decided to undertake after feeling that my skills were slipping a little here and there. While it started as a personal project for self improvement, I’m hoping to inspire the drive to sketch in budding artists, new designers, and even seasoned designers and illustrators alike.

Let me be clear – this is by no means a perfect collection or a collection of perfect sketches by some master designer. This is the raw, daily output of someone trying to inspire the drive to sketch. Sure, I know it’s not all perfect, but there’s passion in these sketches.

My hope is that in some way I can inspire anyone interested in drawing to do what I did – to sketch, draw, scribble, or doodle whatever it is you feel like. In the long run, you’ll be better off for it, and in no time, you’ll see marked improvement in your skills.

That’s what this sketch-a-day project is about – Inspiring others to sketch. If you feel inspired, spread the word, share this on facebook or twitter, or simply tell a colleague or classmate. Spread the spark of passion for the sketch!

Metro State I.D. department BBQ/KICKBALL

Ok folks due to popular demand we're scheduling a Metro State College of Denver Industrial Design dept. bbq/kickball event at City Park Denver.

Thats right this event is for the entire Metro State I.D. department gathering. It doesn't matter if you are an IDSA member, ALL Metro State I.D. students and faculty are welcome to show up.

We'll be starting the kickball and bbq action at 3pm, staying in the park until 7-8pm.

There are two great spots in the City Park for bbq and kickball. Plan A we meet just south of the "pavilion". If that area is crowded we'll initiate plan B which will move us west of the pavilion near field SC4. You should be able to spot our grill and GREEN marker balloon either way! Please refer to the jpg map for details.

Bring your own beverages (no bottles), and food to cook on the grill!

Pech Kucha @ MCA

PechaKucha for Haiti
20 seconds, 20 images, 200 cities, 2000 presentations, 200,000 people - with the aim to raise $1,000,000 for rebuilding Haiti.
February 20th, location and presenters TBA, free / all donations go to Architecture for Humanity

THE 20th FEBRUARY

On Saturday 20 February PechaKucha events will be held all around the world. All the PechaKucha Night cities will be connected by a 24-hour PechaKucha presentation WAVE that will gradually move westward city by city, circumnavigating the globe. The wave will be dropping in on each city for around 10 minutes for a video link up and a live presentation. This presentation wave will be streamed over the internet on a 24-hour WAVEcast, which we think will be a world first.

THE WAVE

The PechaKucha Presentation WAVE will start simultaneously in SuperDeluxe in Tokyo where PechaKucha Night was first conceived, and in our most easterly city in New Zealand. It will then move west crossing all times zones and cultures. The PechaKucha WAVE will finally come ashore in San Francisco, where Architecture for Humanity (AFH) is headquartered. AFH's founder, Cameron Sinclair, will be there with the rest of San Francisco to give presentations and celebrate the successful circumnavigation of the world. That will be about 1pm Sunday Japan time. We plan to a have a big event in Tokyo, linking to San Francisco by video so we can all focus our thoughts on Haiti.
