Check out their new website http://www.doublebutter.com/ . Their furniture lineup all share the DoubleButter design "DNA": made in the USA, high quality, modern, and very durable. Each piece is made in house, and most of the materials are also Denver sourced. You can see all of their furniture on their website, which features high quality product photography of each piece in their furniture lineup.

Presentations:

1. David Klein (IDSA Western District V.P.)- Gave a key note speech outlining IDSA events for the year, specifically the IDSA western district conference.

2. Jason Belaire (Rocky Mountain IDSA Chapter president)- Introduced both Brian Larabee and Dexter Thorton of DoubleButter

3. Brian Larabee/Dexter Thorton- Presented their company, manufacturing, and some of the products that they design and produce in house, this was then followed by an audience Q&A session.

5.26.2009

Upcoming IDSA event - invite ANYONE!

On July 1st (a great way to start off the July 4th weekend) we have secured one of the REI Flagship store Conference rooms for our next meeting. There will be food/drink/fellowship and hopefully to match our first meeting at the beginning of the year. In other words, lets make this a BIG to DO! : )

Please mark your calendars and pass the word on to IDSA and Non-IDSA people. Yes, this is also to include people interested in learning more about the outdoor industry and what life is like as a designer in this field.

I'll be putting out more of a formal PDF the week of June 1st. However, this is to get your taste-buds going! : )

So - here's the plan:

1. Meeting at REI Flagship - Denver, Colorado
2. Food and Beverages at REI (come hungry)
3. EVERY STINKING DESIGNER that either currently as their own design or the company they're working for on the floor currently at REI in the Colorado region NEEDS to be there!
4. If you don't have anything currently on the floor but did last season, bring along this example and we'll give you the opportunity to discuss and explain etc.
5. We will put pods together in order to circulate around the REI floor. 10-15 minute rotations ect. TIME Frames are subject to change!
6. Head off into the sunset in search of more beer! good time to talk more in a different setting!

Overall macro vision = to give students, design professionals, non-design professionals and the community a glimps into what PRODUCT DESIGN is like for the "outdoor" industry.

YES! This is great way to network and explore other areas of design that non-outdoor industry people aren't familiar with!!!!

I NEED your help to pull this event off! REI has a 3 month waiting list and I finally got the go-ahead last week. Let's make this REALLY cool! Something for our neighboring chapters to envy!

Please pass along the word to others as I am missing about 75% of emails from our fellow designers that fall into this above category! Again, you guys have to help me - I can't pull this off alone! : )

Thanks in advance for all of your efforts and helping to make this event even better then our first one!!!!

If you have any questions please contact any MSCD-IDSA student officers or Ted Shin, or Jason Belaire, IDSA RM chair.

IND on News 9

This spring semester 2009, the Advanced ID studio and Intermediate ID studio classes participated in a sponsored design project for Pride mobility, a manufacturer of home health care devices. The goal of the project was to develop an innovative wheel chair or adaptive device for Bryan Anderson, who lost both of his legs and his left hand serving in Iraq, to pursue his sporting activities. The final projects were featured on News 9 on May 12, 2009.

$5.00 discount for this showing. Normal price is $20.00 per. Tickets
can only be purchased on http://www.objectifiedfilm.com/special-screening-in-denver/

word out!

Design Wisdom From UTS Grads

  1. It’s called referencing, NOT copying!
  2. Whoever says being pretty is not a function?
  3. Good artists copy, great artists steal
  4. [Insert buzzword] is the new black
  5. If you can’t hide it, make a feature of it
  6. If you cannot use it, then call it art
  7. Simple is hard
  8. Power is nothing without ctrl-z
  9. Live trace is for cheaters
  10. Measure twice, cut once
  11. Form follow function
  12. Don’t try to be original, just try to be good
  13. Be brave enough to live creatively
  14. Design is in everything we make, but also between those things

Rocky Mountain Chapter Event: Wednesday March 18th

Hello all,

Short notice I know. Sorry for that! However, we have a very fun and informative meeting planned for next week.

Basically, Melodie Miller (Director of Product Develpment - Sierra Designs; Apparel) will be giving us an overview of how SD designs and developes product. She'll be hitting on some key points such as;
  • Design Innovation in Technical outer wear (existing and how to...)
  • How to cross over with fashion and technically performance based products
  • Perceptions in a niche market place and the permission given to expand

I believe that in our given economic climate right now, it would be advantageous for those NOT involved in the apparel industry to attend this as it might provide valuable information in some tangible ways to bring back to our clients/employers.

In addition to the above;

"Composition started as my way to express and share a passion for design. It started a little over 5 years ago with a 450 square foot space in lower downtown Denver. It was a terrible retail location but I guess I was so optimistic and naive that I didn't know any better. I think my sheer exuberance for the products, vendors and the people I was meeting carried me through that first 15 months. Since then, I have learned a great deal about the retail business and its many challenges; grown the store to 2600 square feet in its current Belmar location and continued to feed and share my passion for design and the creative community that this store reaches. I have a lot more to say and share, but right now there is a website to launch."
Jennifer Roberts, Owner; Composition

In addition to hosting our event, Composition has offered us 15% off everything in the store for this event only!

Please join us!

"you're sitting in a CHAIR in the SKY"

Stay on top of the design Workshop

When: Tuesday, Feb 24 (yeah, that's tomorrow) @4:30pm
Where: The Studio
Why: Because staying on top of all the design news that you should be staying on top of is hard. This includes sources like Core77 (& Coroflot), Designboom, and even the Metro ID posts (like what used to be on the bulletin outside the office). I'll show you how to keep this and the IDSA schedule and blog all within easy reach from anywhere that you can access the internet.

I'll introdcue the concept of and RSS reader, show a few free options, and then show how to use it as a tool while you're in the Industrial Design Program.

The presentation will only be 30-45 minutes, depending on questions, and I will be happy to work with individuals afterward to help set them up.

Email me with any questions at jeffrey@matthias.org

IDSA Rocky Mountain Chapter is having an event!

Hey kids, click on the picture for all the details.
This event is coming up on Feb 11 from 6pm through the evening. I'll update this with the RSVP shortly. This should be a good way to get an idea of what the professional chapter of IDSA is like and meet some local industry professionals.

If you are interested, RSVP to belworld@mac.com

Info from meeting on 1/130/2009

First off, there were new officers selected for Fall 2009.
President - Robyn Meier
Vice President/Secretary - Jeffrey Matthias
Treasurer - Alex Horn

Congrats to them. (Yes, I did just congratulate myself)

We had a quick run-down on the little that is known about the 2009 IDSA Western District Conference:
-Last Weekend of April (24-26)
-Will be Somewhere in Santa Monica, CA (LAX airport if you're looking to book a flight)

All the members present brainstormed about what they want from Metro IDSA this semester. Here's the basics:
-Team competitions (so look out for good ones and let us know)
-Develop a IDSA or Metro ID website/gallery to show student work (we will need volunteers)
-Work on circulating submission info to publications
-Look for pro bono design opportunities with local businesses
-Enter the Mod Livin' dog contest ( http://www.modlivin.com/bestinshow.cfm )
-Materials swap
-Bake Sale (ok, not really, but we do need to have some fundraisers, so if you get ideas...)
-Bike Ride (you DO have a bike, DON'T YOU?)
-More Sketching Workshops
-Digital Workshops (Illustrator/Photoshop, etc.)
-Graphic Design Workshop (serious, I've seen your portfolio layout. We both need this one)
-Composites Workshop
-Webinar (obviously at other peoples' mercy here)
-A mentor program (of course, I'd be happy to tell all of the newer students what to do)
-A materials auction (in lieu of the swap, in order to raise funds)

Let us know if you have any other bright ideas. Keep the dim ones to yourself, please.

Pretty soon I will be hosting a quick workshop on staying on top of design news and idsa info the easy way.

I'm tired of writing. And I can't think of anything else. Oh, Jacob ordered more veggie pizzas than meat and cheese pizzas combined. Are we going to let that stand?
